About
The Wesleyan Department of Psychology has a long and storied history that began with the establishment of a psychological laboratory within the Department of Philosophy in 1894— approximately 63 years after the University was founded. The laboratory, which was among the first 20 psychology labs in the United States, continued to develop until 1913, when it became the Department of Psychology.
Today’s department has 18 faculty providing expertise in six subareas of study — Cognitive Psychology, Cultural Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Psychopathology, Neuroscience, and Social Psychology. Our faculty run 14 active research labs involving students in their research.
Throughout its long history three tenets have guided the department: a research-based approach to psychological inquiry (including critical perspectives on scientific psychology), an emphasis on the value of teaching and mentorship, and an effort to contribute to the greater good beyond the walls of academia.
The department awards both an undergraduate B.A. and a B.A./M.A degree.
