More About the Employee Experience
Mission and Purpose
Wesleyan's faculty and staff create an environment where practical idealism is possible every day.
- Partners in the Mission: While our faculty lead the academic journey through teaching and research, our staff provide specialized expertise—from managing complex technological systems to stewarding historic facilities—that builds the foundation for our community. By ensuring operational excellence in every department, staff empower the entire university to think critically and translate ideals into real-world action.
- Stewardship of the Wesleyan Experience: Our employees build and maintain the environment where students thrive. Whether you teach in the classroom, coordinate campus life, support student wellbeing, or uphold the University's administrative operations, your work ensures Wesleyan’s excellence.
- A Culture of Collective Impact: The University’s success is a collaborative effort. By embodying a generosity of spirit in their daily interactions and professional duties, employees create the vibrant community that defines the Wesleyan experience for students, faculty, and staff alike.
Career Development
Wesleyan employees build their skills and opportunities thanks to regular training events, educational benefits, and internal mobility that allows them to pursue their strengths and interests.
- Success at Wes: The Success at Wes program offers internal workshops and seminars in areas such as Communication, Information Technology, Equity and Inclusion, Finance, Human Resources, Safety, Supervisory, and Wellness.
- Tuition Assistance for Lifelong Learning: Employees are eligible for tax-free tuition assistance to take undergraduate or graduate courses on campus. Those pursuing degrees at other accredited institutions can take advantage of the Educational Assistance benefit to receive reimbursement for successful course completion, helping you align your academic and professional goals.
- A Commitment to Internal Mobility: We support internal mobility and professional growth by helping employees explore opportunities across the University. By recognizing transferable skills and potential, we make it easier for employees to grow, advance, and pursue new career paths throughout their time here.
Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Wesleyan’s faculty and staff enjoy a workplace committed to creating an accepting and welcoming environment where everyone can thrive.
- Fostering a Culture of Belonging: The Office for Equity and Inclusion helps our University move beyond recruitment to ensure every community member feels valued. Through institutional initiatives and campus-wide programming, the Office of Equity and Inclusion can share diverse perspectives through meaningful and respectful dialogue.
- Connection Through Employee Resource Groups: Our formally recognized Employee Resource Groups help employees form community at work. These include the Administrators and Faculty of Color Alliance (AFCA), Pride @ Wes (PAWS), Womxn@WES, and the Wesleyan International Network (WIN).
- Specialized Training and Allyship: Community is also built through shared learning and accountability. Through our Success at Wes programs, employees can access specialized equity and inclusion sessions, including Title VII and IX trainings. Additionally, events hosted by departments across our community regularly offer space for those with differing views to engage in meaningful conversation, grow their understanding, and build a respectful, supportive environment for all.
Employee Wellbeing
Wesleyan facilitates true health by supporting a balance of physical, mental, and financial well-being, empowering employees to thrive in every facet of life. Beyond our medical, vision, and dental benefits, Wesleyan employees can experience:
- Comprehensive Mental Health and Work-Life Support: We prioritize peace of mind through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), provided by BHS. This free, 24/7 confidential service offers up to four sessions per issue with master’s-level clinicians for assessment and problem resolution. Beyond counseling, the EAP provides valuable work-life resources, including legal assistance, eldercare referrals, and childcare support.
- Financial Wellness and Empowerment: In addition to our competitive retirement matching, we provide financial counseling and education through our Employee Assistance Program. We also offer financial training and workshops through Success at Wes, ensuring you have the tools to build and protect your future.
